My Ubuntu Upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10
Hello Ubuntunees
It is 18:09 I have started the update manager and clicked upgrade.
The wheels on the bus goes round and round, round and round, the wheels on the bus goes round and round, all day long
18:15 got the release notes window and clicked the upgrade button
18:16 asking for my password
18:17 “third party sources disabled” window
18:18 fetching 46 files
****** Damn got to help get the tea ready, will continue when I get back ******
18:30 Window asking if I want to start the upgrade, 23 packages removed 203 new packages 1126 packages to be upgraded. download time 1 hour 55 minutes. Clicking start now… To be continued >>>>>>
19:30 Not even half way downloading all the required packages. The estimated time fluctuates between 1 hour 3 mins and 2 hours 5 mins. I suspect this is due to the heavy load on the servers with the release of 8.10. Also my sons playing games on another computer may have something to do with it!!!!!
Oh Hum!!!!!……….. Time for me to have a cough vee!!!!
Just read the following article
http://www.intranetjournal.com/articles/200810/ij_10_30_08a.html
Wonder if I shouldn’t have upgraded!!!!!
20:00 40 mins to go…. ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz
20:30 7 mins to go
21:00 Configuring libpam0g error occurred while configuration information for evolution-alarm notify
eek Shouldn’t cause a problem as i don’t use evolution.
21:00 Will take about 6 hours to install the upgrades!!!!! wow (Actually will take faster than that, the estimate is really bad. in the time it has taken me to write this line it is now 4 hours 25 min)
21:08 Replaced the cupsd file
21:22 Replaced the dhclient.conf file
21:24 Prompted about the smb.conf, kept the current one.
21:25 Replaced release-upgrades file
21:26 asked about the php.ini file
21.29 asked about the dovecot.conf file
21:33 asked to replace the netbeans.conf file
21:42 System restart
21:45 Login Screen slightly different colour. System booted up fine. I had problems connecting to the wireless due to the security resets but once I enter the security settings everything seems to work fine.
The speed seems similar if not faster than 8.4. Not that much difference at all.
New wallpaper… Lovely
The process for locking screen is different.
The totem movie player seems to work better and smoother than before.
In all a nice upgrade and everything seems to be hunky dory. it is now 21:59 which means from start to finish has taken just under 4 hours. Whew!!!!
Night night fellow ubuntuees

Hmm..that remind me…I got a new Sony SZ laptop (yes it’s very nice)…with Vista Home Premium. This time I decided on a dual boot - windows for testing anything work related.
Proceeded to update Windows…now this is a new laptop. It’s not like it’s a “next version of OS” upgrade or anything like that.
8 hours later, I was done.
Wait I lie…I started getting those prompts about my battery being invalid and giving me no choice but to suspend and fix it…every time.
Result?
Wiped it and installed Ubuntu 8.10 instead, no dual-booting. Sod it, after 8 hours I just can’t face anymore bloody work on “tweaking”. Ubuntu 8.10 RC - altogether took just under 2 hours total to install and update. Then copy my /home over and system is configured to my liking. Done
Issues with Sony SZ:
- brightness setting can’t be changed - will look into that.
- MotionEye webcam doesn’t work out of box - but there appears to be a driver available but not in repo’s so more work there
Otherwise, everything else is just fine. Onboard Intel graphics is wonderful. Nvidia graphics is wonderful (SZ comes with a switch so you can switch between the two, one give speed, other battery life). Suspend etc all work fine. Lovely, am susprised that it all worked this well on a Sony laptop as wasn’t expecting that.

I got a toshibia laptop and soon as i switched it on windows vista needed to do a update.
Was not able to do anything while it was updating, unlike ubuntu you could surf while updating OR upgrading.
Then the crapware that comes with every windows install pc/laptop needed to update.
To be fair to Microsoft its the crapware that slowed Vista down, which i have removed.
Keeping vista for now as I very often fixing other peoples computers and i want to get used to vista.
Ubuntu on Dual boot and no issues at all
