Ubuntu 8.10

I just realized how sad I am!!!!

I am getting really excited about the new Ubuntu 8.10, which is being released today. Why am I excited? I really haven’t got a clue!!!!.

There is no particular improvement or widget that particularly excites me. in fact the two things I am concerend about is

1. There have been reports that Ubuntu 8.10 is slower than 8.04. However that is normal as every operating system gets slower as more stuff is added. Maybe for 9.10 they could think about a Ubuntu diet so only the bare bones they Ubuntu needs to get running is installed, or maybe offer a slimbuntu version? **Updated** Actually I forgot there is XUbuntu which focuses on speed* **

2. The latest release of openoffice is not included. I can however understand Ubuntu’s decssion and I agree with the decsion but still……. would be nice to have the latest version. (Hope it will be included in the update manager soon)

BUT…. despite these negatives I will be upgrading to 8.10 as soon as it is released and I am near a network connection. It is strange that people get excited about things for no particular reason other than it is new!

Will post my experience of Ubuntu 8.10 after I have installed it later on.

For now UBUNTU ROCKS.

This is Dy reporting from Planet Earth (I think)

been using 8.10 for 2 months now ;)

It’s a worthy upgrade if you are using a laptop, you get can then get encrypted Private folder’s (with Hardy I used the encrypted disk method but this carry a performance penelty as the entire disk is encrypted).

I can then create links to all those senistive items into the Private folder and have full speed of an unencrypted disk. Useful.

Speedwise - I don’t see any notice much difference, but if I look I’ll say Ibex is faster. Especially for boot up etc as they did focus on speed and will continue to do so.

I tend to wait a few months, till they iron few things out or soon its on a disc on Linux Format magazine that I buy every month.

Being more of a command line user I wouldn’t notice much changes in speed.
how ever I do see new things when setting up peoples PC to use Ubuntu and how much easier it is.
for example plugging blue tooth dongle and up it pops to see which phone or device I want to plug in.
Can’t imagine them doing it via command line LOL

I use command line and trying to use it more, but the GUI just makes it so much easier!!

Which Linux magazine do you recommend?

maybe I will try and have the patience to wait longer before upgrading to 9.04.

Just upgraded to Ubuntu 8:10… yeah bit late.
Also wife bought me a laptop with ubuntu installed so I can finally take it round to my local LUG Showing how things works is so much easier trying to explain it .

I buy Linux format ..have a read in tesco or WHS and see if you like it.
