I have now started a page for my MSc Project.

The aim of the project is to build a framework to allow people to create a BSL Dictionary. You will see I have created a questionnaire and would be grateful to all those who complete the questionnaire.

My Ubuntu Upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Hello Ubuntunees

It is 18:09 I have started the update manager and clicked upgrade.

The wheels on the bus goes round and round, round and round, the wheels on the bus goes round and round, all day long

18:15 got the release notes window and clicked the upgrade button

18:16 asking for my password

18:17 “third party sources disabled” window

18:18 fetching 46 files

****** Damn got to help get the tea ready, will continue when I get back ******

18:30 Window asking if I want to start the upgrade, 23 packages removed 203 new packages 1126 packages to be upgraded. download time 1 hour 55 minutes. Clicking start now… To be continued >>>>>>

19:30 Not even half way downloading all the required packages. The estimated time fluctuates between 1 hour 3 mins and 2 hours 5 mins. I suspect this is due to the heavy load on the servers with the release of 8.10. Also my sons playing games on another computer may have something to do with it!!!!!

Oh Hum!!!!!……….. Time for me to have a cough vee!!!!

Just read the following article

http://www.intranetjournal.com/articles/200810/ij_10_30_08a.html

Wonder if I shouldn’t have upgraded!!!!!

20:00 40 mins to go…. ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzz

20:30 7 mins to go

21:00 Configuring libpam0g error occurred while configuration information for evolution-alarm notify :-( eek Shouldn’t cause a problem as i don’t use evolution.

21:00 Will take about 6 hours to install the upgrades!!!!! wow (Actually will take faster than that, the estimate is really bad. in the time it has taken me to write this line it is now 4 hours 25 min)

21:08 Replaced the cupsd file

21:22 Replaced the dhclient.conf file

21:24 Prompted about the smb.conf, kept the current one.

21:25 Replaced release-upgrades file

21:26 asked about the php.ini file

21.29 asked about the dovecot.conf file

21:33 asked to replace the netbeans.conf file

21:42 System restart

21:45 Login Screen slightly different colour. System booted up fine. I had problems connecting to the wireless due to the security resets but once I enter the security settings everything seems to work fine.

The speed seems similar if not faster than 8.4. Not that much difference at all.

New wallpaper… Lovely :-)

The process for locking screen is different.

The totem movie player seems to work better and smoother than before.

In all a nice upgrade and everything seems to be hunky dory. it is now 21:59 which means from start to finish has taken just under 4 hours. Whew!!!!

Night night fellow ubuntuees
